What is a Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT)?
 

A Breath Alcohol Technician is a person who instructs and assists employees during DOT alcohol testing and operates an evidential breath testing device. BATs must meet the applicable qualification requirements under 49 CFR Part 40 before performing DOT BAT functions.
 

How do I become a qualified Breath Alcohol Technician?

You must complete the required qualification training, receive training to proficiency on the specific device you will use, and successfully complete the initial proficiency demonstration. For BATs, this demonstration consists of seven consecutive error-free mock tests observed and evaluated by a qualified individual.
 

Is BAT training available online?

Does the $139 BAT course fully qualify me as a BAT?

No. The $139 course covers the procedures training component. To meet the qualification requirements, you must also complete device-specific proficiency training and successfully demonstrate proficiency before performing DOT BAT functions.
 

What is the difference between BAT Procedures Training and device proficiency training?

Procedures Training covers the federal rules, alcohol testing procedures, documentation, and responsibilities of a BAT. Device proficiency training teaches you to operate the specific device you will use and includes the required initial proficiency demonstration.
 

How many mock tests must a BAT pass?

A BAT must successfully complete seven consecutive error-free mock tests during the initial proficiency demonstration. The demonstration must be monitored and evaluated by a qualified individual who attests in writing that the mock tests were error-free.
 

Can I complete my device proficiency training by webcam?

Yes. Certified Training Solutions offers real-time webcam proficiency training for supported devices. The instructor must be able to observe and interact with the trainee in real time and evaluate the proficiency demonstration. Confirm that your specific device is supported before registering.
 

Which breath alcohol testing devices are supported?

Supported device options depend on the proficiency training available. Check the current registration options or contact Certified Training Solutions to confirm that your device's make and model can be accommodated.
 

How long do I have to complete both training components?

Certified Training Solutions currently instructs students to complete both components within 30 days. Plan your course and proficiency appointment accordingly, and confirm the applicable scheduling requirements when registering.
 

How often must a BAT complete refresher training?

Under 49 CFR § 40.213, a BAT must complete refresher training at least once every five years. The refresher requirements include the applicable qualification training and proficiency demonstration requirements.
 

Does DOT issue a BAT license or certification?

DOT regulations establish the qualification requirements for performing BAT functions. A course certificate by itself does not establish that you have completed all required training and proficiency demonstrations. You must meet the applicable requirements and maintain supporting documentation.
 

Are group discounts available for BAT training?

You must maintain documentation demonstrating that you currently meet the applicable requirements of 49 CFR § 40.213. You may be required to provide this documentation to DOT agency representatives, employers, and qualifying third parties.
 

What happens if I make an error that causes a DOT alcohol test to be cancelled?

The regulations require error-correction training when an error causes a test to be cancelled because of a fatal or uncorrected flaw. This training must occur within 30 days of notification of the error and must cover the applicable subject area, including the required mock tests and written documentation of proficiency.
