Good news for the trucking industry: Annual required random drug testing rates cut in half!

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA - DOT) has announced that, starting in 2016, the new random testing rate for drivers has been lowered to 25% (from 50%). You may find the notice at:https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/enforcement/annual-random-controlled-substances-testing-percentage-rate-calendar-yearThe change was made pursuant to 49 CFR 382.305, which allows for the random testing rate to be lowered if the positive drug test rate falls below 1.0% for three years in a row according to controlled substances random test data in FMCSA's Management Information System (MIS).  Note: The positive rate was below 1.0% from 2011 - 2013, which prompted this change for 2016.What does this mean for trucking companies and those that employ drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs)?With an estimated 6 million CMV drivers covered by the FMCSA/Department of Transportation (DOT) testing rules in the U.S.A., the new lower testing percentage is likely to save employers a bundle.  Example:  Instead of paying for 3 million random drug tests in 2016 (50%), employers will only be required to pay for 1.5 million random tests (25%) ... This adds up to a 

savings of at least 75 million dollars

 for trucking/transportation companies that employ truck drivers in the U.S.!  (Note: This is assuming a low-end test cost of $50 for each drug test/collection.)Besides the health, social, and safety benefits of a drug-free workforce, there are definitely financial benefits to keeping your employees drug free, as well!
